It’s been an ongoing struggle

Yesterday afternoon, the shit really hit the fan. For the past two weeks Dylan has had (what I thought was) a slight cold. Minor head congestion, a little coughing - no biggie, right? Then on our way home from Lexington last weekend, I noticed that greenish/yellow gunk was coming out of his eyes (much like sleep) and started crusting his eyelashes together at night while he slept. I figured this was happening because he had all that sinus congestion - and he hasn’t yet grasped the concept of being able to blow his nose. So, my thinking was that after a while it had to start coming out somewhere, right? I figured the best that could be done was keep his eyes clean and to really work with him on teaching him how to blow his nose.
Yesterday, though, he was acting funny. His eyes were slightly glazed over, he wasn’t eating, he wasn’t playing, and he had one hell of an attitude. I also noticed that every now and then he would start crying his little eyes out while clutching the back of his head. The same area every time - with no warning at all. I was genuinely worried at this point.
I called Josh and told him we had to get in to see a doctor, quick. The problem: it was Friday afternoon at around 1:00. Wonderful timing I have, huh? Luckily, we got in to see a doctor and this was his diagnosis:
Eye infection (conjunctivitis) in both eyes.
Throat infection.
Major head congestion.
Wow. Talk about feeling like a bad parent at that moment. How could we not have known? What signs did we miss or misunderstand or pass off as something else entirely all that time? :( It was really upsetting.
Anyway, he needed a different drug for each condition - one of which being eye drops. I’ve come to find that trying to squirt eye drops into the eyes of a miserable and confused toddler is a horrific and painful experience - on both ends. I can only pray that after it’s all over, he’s well again and back to being 110%. Hopefully, my baby won’t have to go through this again, and if he does, I’ll be able to recognize the symptoms and get him medical attention before it gets too bad and out of control. :(

Aww, poor little fella. It’s hard with kids because of the small amount of communication they are capable of. I would’ve assumed the same thing from the symptoms he had. It’s not like you ignored anything. You’re a good mom. :)
Poor little guy, hope he feels better soon. I agree with what Caitlin said, nothing wrong on your part it’s hard to communicate with a toddler. You’re a great mom just for worrying about that alone.
awww poor little guy I hope he is feeing better. at least you were a good mommy and got him in to see the doctor. Take care.
