Brought to you live from my kitchen table

My husband has been dropping hint after hint for months about how badly he wants a laptop. Though I’ve never disagreed with getting one, I also never agreed with it either. Why would we need two computers? The one we have is less than a year old and works perfectly fine… besides, they can get so expensive.
Though the rational part of his brain was telling him it wasn’t a good idea at the time, the computer god inside of him prevailed on the day we got our tax return back (this past Friday), and well, here I am sitting at the kitchen table blogging about how my husband is a total electronic whorebag. But it takes one to know one right? I could definitely get spoiled by this. Just a few more hours on this baby and I probably won’t ever want to return to the lonely little corner of our bedroom where the desktop sits. *cue sad violin music*
I’m a total laptop virgin. I’ve never used one before now, let alone own one. First time Vista user too, which I must say, is pretty fucking awesome. There’s not a huge difference between Vista and XP (not that I’ve seen yet, anyway) but I do like the sleek style of it as opposed to XP. It will still take some getting used to, of course.
If only I could find where the hell I put my Paint Shop Pro installation CD. If I could have PSP on this sucker, then there’d definitely be no going back. But unfortunately, it’s been over a year since I’ve used it, and I have no clue where it could be. Dammit.
Nevertheless, I’m excited to do more of this ‘kitchen blogging’ as I never knew that blogging, or doing anything online for that matter, was much more exciting when you had the ability to do it from wherever you wanted. It must have something to do with the sense of freedom…as in you’re no longer contained to the four walls of your office, bedroom, etc. and are free to surf the ‘net from any room in the house. As long as your internet connection holds out, that is. ;)
So whether you have a laptop/notebook, or just simply just want one really bad, what are the things you look for before purchasing? What’s your favorite OS? Also, where in your house is your favorite spot to get online?

Vista is a learning deal, it takes time and a bit of frustration. Laptops are uber convenient, that’s all there is to say. Haha. I like to sit on my couch when I have my laptop.. or lie in bed occasionally because it’s more comfortable. I still have a preference for XP though because it seems to run better.
Yeah, I broke down and got a laptop with my returns to. Except the roles where reversed in this situation. I wanted it and Grant didn’t. I prefer XP to Vista. My dream comp is an iMac though. Yeah. Sad I know. I like to room to various places around the house.
I love my laptop, especially for the wireless internet. They are very convenient for anyone who travels too! I still have my desktop (with XP) but my laptop with Vista is deffinately my favorite.
I received my laptop as a birthday gift in 2000 and it still runs… surprisingly. I do need to buy a new laptop for school purposes, since I cannot use the one that I have because the battery is completely dead, the power jack is faulty, and there are other things wrong with it; but I have been holding off because of money issues and overall uncertainty about buying another laptop.
While they are convenient and certainly cool to carry around, I am actually not that fond of laptops. Laptops are unjustifiably more expensive than desktops in all areas: more expensive to initially purchase (and the part options usually aren’t as good than the part options you can choose from when building/purchasing a desktop PC), more expensive to fix (a place I went to for service charged $40 more per hour for service on laptops), and more expensive to upgrade.
If/when I do decide to purchase another laptop, I don’t think I would purchase from a store again. Laptops (as I expressed) are pretty much rip-offs to begin with and retail store prices are generally higher yet. When buying online, you can use coupon codes to save money; try performing a Google search for “laptop coupon codes” or “laptop discount codes” for various sites (i.e. Dell, Sony, Apple, etc.) I suggested this to my boyfriend when he purchased his laptop from Dell. He bought a $1,000 laptop, but payed only $800 or so (including shipping) for it after using a coupon code.
I looked at Dell laptops, which let you choose from various basic models and add-on parts. They also offer monthly payments, I believe. I also looked at Overstock.com, which supposedly offer lower prices for all sorts of things, and the Sonystyle.com site, which offer clearance/refurbished laptops and desktops for lower prices.
Good luck finding the best prices and options to suit what you need. =)
Just wanted to drop in and say congrats on your laptop! They’re addictive. :)
I got my first laptop in June of 2002. Unfortunately, I returned it because of heating issues a few weeks later, and from then on had a desktop until February of 2006. Now? Two years with my baby by my side. I have my desktop, but the laptop is SO nice with its portability!
OS: I have and love Vista. :)
